Now that you have your decal here is how we recommend applying them. We recommend the following tools when applying vinyl decals.
- Masking tape
- Liquid dish detergent and warm water (I use and old window cleaner spray bottle with only a couple drops of detergent)
- Measuring tape
- Squeegee (hard plastic material - plastic putty knife or credit card)
- Isopropyl Alcohol (rubbing alcohol)
- Pin or razor blade (optional)
Patience, good preparation, a steady hand, and good weather will produce the best results.
Surface temperatures should be between 50 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit. If it is too hot to touch it’s probably over 90 degrees. If it is too cold the adhesive becomes brittle. Wind is not your friend when applying vinyl decals. A little wind can cause major headaches.
First, figure out where you want to place your decal. For large decals or decals of specialty vinyls please see additional instructions below.
Your vinyl decal comes in one piece and is sandwiched between a clear or semi opaque layer of application tape and a layer of waxy backing paper. The backing paper is to protect the adhesive side of the decal and the application tape is to hold the pieces of the decal in place while positioning it.
Clean the surface:
This is all too often the cause for decals to prematurely crack, curl or just fall off. All surfaces are contaminated to some degree. To ensure good adhesion to any vehicle surface it is important that you follow these recommended procedures.
1. Wash and rinse the area with liquid dish detergent and warm water. Then dry the vehicle surface with a clean, lint-free towel or cloth.
2. Finish up the by wiping down the entire area with Isopropyl Alcohol. Your surface is now ready to apply the vinyl.
Application Procedures:
For smaller decals it is most common to apply “dry”. For larger decals see instructions below. With dry applications it is important to remember once the vinyl touches the surface, there is no sure way to remove it without damage to the decal.
3. Measure for proper placement and use a small piece of masking tape in the top center of the decal to hold it in place temporarily. Then measure each side to make sure it is square with its surroundings. Measure from the decal itself rather than the backing since it could be cut slightly off. Place a long piece of masking tape along the entire top edge, half on the decal and half on the desired surface. Stand back and look at its positioning and make sure this is where you really want it to be.
Use the taped edge as a hinge and invert the decal. Carefully remove the waxy backing paper watching that all of the vinyl releases. Be careful not to stretch the vinyl or it could cause permanent damage. Do not allow the adhesive to touch itself or anything else until you are ready. For wet applications see instructions below at this point.
4. Slowly and evenly lower the decal in place avoiding wrinkles or air pockets. Using the squeegee or credit card start from the middle of the decal and apply pressure at approximately a 45 degree and work any bubbles to the outside edge.
5. Remove the application tape by very slowly peeling it back on itself at a 180 degree angle. If you notice the vinyl starting to lift, stop peeling and push it back down with your thumbnail then continue removing tape. Most small air bubbles will go away in a couple days, or you can use a pin or razor blade to pierce a small hole at one side of the bubble and push the air out. Do Not slice the bubble or the vinyl may gap with temperature changes.
Wet Application:
For large or complex decals it is recommended to apply it wet. Follow all of the directions as above through Step 3. Following Step 3 lightly spray both the surface you wish to apply to and the exposed adhesive side of the decal with the soapy water mixture. Be careful as you wet the edge near the masking tape as the water can make the tape release. Apply the decal to the surface. With the wet application, if you need to reposition the decal it is possible as long as you are very careful. Since this is a wet installation it is important to push the water and small air bubbles out from under the vinyl with your squeegee or credit card. Start from the center of the decal and push the water and air to the outside edge. Allow vinyl to set until dry then continue back up to Step 5 for application tape removal.
